After toppling of Communist icon Vladimir Lenin’s statue in Tripura, vandalization of Hindu nationalist Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s statue in West Bengal and social reformer Periyar’s statue in Tamil Nadu, now Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s statue has been vandalized by miscreants in Kokrajhar.
The statue of Communist icon Vladimir Lenin was toppled at Belona in Tripura after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victory in the recently-held Tripura Assembly polls defeating the Left Front which ruled for 25 years, then the statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, a Hindu nationalist and founder of right wing nationalist Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1951 was vandalized at Kolkata in West Bengal and an statue of Dravidian icon and social reformer EVR Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar was vandalized at Vellore in Tamil Nadu.
As the incidents caused tensions across country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly disapproved of such incidents.
“Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with and booked under relevant provisions of the law,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
The founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s statue was defaced by unidentified miscreants at Kokrajhar, the headquarter town of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), on Tuesday night.
Sensation prevails in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) region after the incident.
The BJP workers in the BTAD region have not taken the matter of vandalisation of Mukherjee’s statue in Kokrajhar easily as the ruling party of Bodoland Territoral Council (BTC), the Bodoland People’s Party (BPF) is a partner in the coalition government in Assam led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Kokrajhar district BJP leaders and workers who gathered at the statue site on Wednesday demanded that the culprits involved in the vandalisation be detected and punished with immediate effect.
Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh after visiting the statue site has already started investigation into the incident and informed that the culprits involved in the act would be arrested soon.
