Northeast Frontier Railway has enhanced safety and security of women passengers

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) has deployed dedicated teams of women Railway Protection Force (RPF) to enhance safety of travellers, especially women passengers, who travel alone by long-distance trains.

In a bid to provide safety and security to women travellers, the teams of women RPF – ‘Meri Saheli’ – have been deployed in train escorting, and passenger and station security across the jurisdiction of NF Railway.

At present, 15 dedicated Meri Saheli squads, consisting of female RPF personnel, are functioning at various railway stations under the NF Railway.

Each squad comprises women RPF officers and staff who take care of single women travellers on the train.

Additionally, as many as 53 Anti Human Trafficking Units (AHTU) are also functioning under the NF Railway for providing safety to women passengers from possible human trafficking.

At least four female passengers have been rescued from being trafficked, and three human traffickers arrested in 2024.

On the other hand, six cases of crime against women have been detected, and six criminals arrested in between January and August this year.

Moreover, on an average, 10 trains are provided with mixed-escort parties  comprising women staff along with male RPF staff to provide instant help to any woman passenger in need.

To strengthen women’s security, a total of 46 railway stations have been equipped with CCTV surveillance systems.  

Closing of doors of stabled coaches is ensured so that empty coaches could not be used to commit any crime against women within the railway premises.

RPF of NF Railway has been proactively working for the safety and security of women travelling on trains.
