The Sikkim state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has on Thursday expelled nine of its functionaries on charges of alleged anti-party activities.

While interacting with media on Thursday, state BJP president D B Chauhan said the individuals have been expelled from the party for six years as part of a disciplinary action.

They are alleged to have been involved in vandalism and attack on BJP functionaries at Singtam party office earlier on January 29.

Those expelled by the party are L R Gurung, Bhim Kumari Sharma, Elie Rai Paul, Tekendra Sharma, Lakpa Sherpa, Dawa Gurung, Kunga Bhutia, Adip Sherpa and Amar Singh Sunar.

“Discipline within the party is our prime criteria and we do not tolerate any form indiscipline in our party,” said Chauhan during a media interaction at the Press Club of Sikkim in Gangtok.

He further said that ‘this should be a message to everyone, within and outside the party strict action is taken against those indulging in anti-party activities’.

Earlier, the state BJP unit had referred the incident to the party’s central leadership in New Delhi and the expulsion was initiated after approval from the central leadership.

Chauhan further appealed to the media and also the general public not to entertain the expelled members as they are no longer associated with the party.
