Weeks after bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir and creation of two union territories—Ladakh and J&K–the National Federation for New States (NFNS) on Friday reiterated their demand for the creation of new states.

“If government can create Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as union territories, Government can also create new states,” said NFNS joint secretary Pramod Boro.

Welcoming the decision of the creation of J&K and Ladakh as UTs, Boro said, “It is of course plummeting the states of J&K in one hand but on the other hand making more convenience to both the region in terms of administration and rapid development.

“We hope the unabated violence and conflict will be culminated by this process of major constitutional amendment and historic decision of the government of India.  We believe there will be sustainable peace and equity in development in the valley,” said Boro.

He emphasized that similar initiatives should be taken by the government for the creation of new states.

The NFNS has been demanding for the creation of new states of Bodoland, Gorkhaland, Vidarbha, Tipraland, Kuki State, Bundelkhand, Purbanchal and Karbi Anglong Auntonomous State.

The NFNS in a statement said that the manner in which the ministry of law and justice has issued the notification invoking powers under Article 370 (1) of the Constitution, “demonstrates that union government has a political will that surmount all obstacles to its aim and vision.

“NFNS calls upon the government to exercise the same political will and urgency in dealing with the other long pending statehood demands,” said Boro.
