Sikkim CM Pawang Chamling with NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma. Northeast Now

The Chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, called on Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at his official residence in Mintokgang on Tuesday evening.

The NCW Chairperson was accompanied by NCW Member Alok Rawat and NCW Coordinator Lilabati and the Chairperson of the Sikkim State Commission for Women, Rehna Rai.

In the meeting, the NCW Chairperson congratulated Chamling for his long tenure as the CM of Sikkim and commended the achievements made by Sikkim under his leadership.

She shared her observations about the emphasis being laid on women empowerment in the State through various women-friendly schemes and programmes and for the equal status enjoyed by women at par with men.

Sharma further praised the Organic Mission of the State and added that other States in the Northeast should replicate the unique practices and successful models of Sikkim.

The Sikkim CM mentioned that Sikkimese women have been enjoying the political and social freedom in the State and were empowered.

He informed that Sikkim passed the Succession Act way back in 2008 which reserves for women the right and privilege to inherit property. He also shared some of the environment-friendly initiatives of the State Government.

CM Chamling thanked the NCW Chairperson and the delegates of the Commission for visiting Sikkim and for choosing the State for hosting the Northeast level conference.

Likewise, the Chairperson reiterated that the Centre will continue to extend all possible support to the State to sustain the high standards of development it has set.
