NCW chairperson discusses political rights of women with Nagaland Governor

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma and counsellor Neha Mahajan held a discussion on the political rights and political empowerment of the women in Nagaland with Governor PB Acharya at the Raj Bhavan, Kohima on Saturday.

The NCW chairperson and the counsellor were accompanied by Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) chairperson Dr Temsula Ao and other members of the State unit.

According to a Raj Bhavan release on Sunday, the NCW chairperson shared her ideas with the State Governor on how the local body elections could be more inclusive in terms of gender.

The release said the Governor suggested many novel ideas to empower the women of the State and he also extended his support to the NSCW.

The Governor and the NCW chairperson also deliberated on the Central Government’s various schemes for women and their implementation in the State.

Sharma said the NCW plans to hold a meeting in the coming months with the North East State Commissions for Women in Nagaland to chalk out new programmes to empower women of the region. In this connection, she said the NCW sought the guidance of the Governor.

The two-member NCW arrived in the State on June 8.

The NCW officials visited the Dimapur district jail and interacted with the female inmates on the day.

They were accompanied by NSCW chairperson Dr Temsula Ao, social welfare department officials, representatives from NGO Sophia Foundation, the advocate providing legal aid to female inmates, etc.

They also held a meeting with the police officials headed by DG (Prisons) Renchamo P Kikon and deliberated on the challenges of the women prisoners and also women police personnel.

According to a press release from State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) – Nagaland, the NCW is mandated, among other things, to inspect institutions where women are housed as prisoners under the provisions of NCW Act 1990.
