Nagaland’s tennis player Vilasier Khate has laurels to both India and his homeland by winning singles and doubles titles in the 5th Indo-Bhutan Friendship Tennis Tournament held from July 2 to July 7, 2019.

The Bhutan Tennis Federation (BTF) organized the tennis tournament held at the National Tennis Centre, Changlimethang in Thimphu, the national capital of Bhutan.

The Indo-Bhutan friendship tennis tournament was organized to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two neighbouring nations.

The tournament was sponsored by the India Bhutan Foundation.

To join tournament, the organizers, Bhutan Tennis Federation, invited players from various contiguous states of India including Nagaland, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim and Meghalaya.

According to media reports, in the singles event of the 5th Indo-Bhutan Friendship Tennis Tournament, Vilasier Khate defeated Ivan Islanovic from Russia and won the game by scoring 7-6, 6-3 in the finals.

In the doubles event, the Nagaland player paired with Bhutanese player Tshering Tobgay and won the doubles title by defeating their opponents.

Keneisezotu Whourie, who is also a player from Nagaland, lost in the semifinals of the tournament.

Apart from the Indian and Bhutanese players, a number of players from other countries like Russia, Nepal and Bangladesh participated in the tournament.

Informing about the win of Vilasier Khate, MLA & advisor, IT, Science and Technology, NRE, Mmhonlumo Kikon stated on his Twitter handle: “A Proud moment for India and #Nagaland as Vilasier Khate wins both singles and doubles titles of the ‘5th #IndoBhutanFriendship Tennis Tournament’ at #Thimpu!”
