People in large numbers took to the streets in Kohima – capital city of Nagaland – in protest gainst the ‘draconian’ armed forces special powers act (AFSPA).

There have been numerous protests across Nagaland, ever since the botched counter-insurgency operation by the 21 para special forces claimed lives of as many as 14 innocent civilians in the state.
The protest at Kohima in Nagaland on Friday was led by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).

The protestors demonstrated in the streets holding placards that read: “Repeal AFSPA”, “Enough is Enough”, “Stop killing innocents”, “Ban AFSPA”, etc.

Several regional parties of the Northeast including the ruling NDPP in Nagaland have criticised AFSPA saying that December 4 Oting incident in Mon district was a misuse and abuse of AFSPA.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims and villagers of Oting in Nagaland’s Mon district have stated that they would not accept compensation until the Army personnel involved in the killing of 14 civilians are arrested and AFSPA is repealed.
