Guwahati: The Naga Studentsโ€™ Federation (NSF) has approached the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with a memorandum expressing concern over reported violations of rights affecting the Naga community, along with a rise in violent incidents in areas inhabited by Naga people.

The document refers to the April 18 attack in TM-Kasom village along National Highway-202 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, where two Naga civilians were killed in an ambush.

The NSF said the incident points to an ongoing situation of insecurity in the region, and referred to several reported cases of assaults, destruction of property, and intimidation in Naga areas in recent years.

It further mentioned issues such as encroachment on land, illegal cultivation of poppy, and increased availability of weapons, stating that these factors have worsened tensions and instability in the area.

The federation appealed to the UNHRC to look into the matter, fix responsibility where needed, support the safeguarding of indigenous communities, and encourage peaceful approaches to resolving conflict.

The memorandum submission was marked alongside a candlelight vigil held at NSF Oking in Kohima on April 23, where people gathered to honour the victims and stand with affected families.

The document carries the signatures of NSF president Mteisuding and general secretary Kenilo Kent.
