Dimapur: Nagalandโ€™s lone Lok Sabha MP, S Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Centre to consider upgrading Kohima Medical College into a premier institution on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences or the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

In a statement, Jamir highlighted the significance of Kohima Medical College as the first medical college in Nagaland, describing it as a milestone in the stateโ€™s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

The college began functioning in September 2023 with an intake capacity of 100 students.

While acknowledging the progress, Jamir said there remains an urgent need to expand institutional capacity, upgrade medical facilities, and enhance academic and research opportunities.

Upgrading the college to the level of AIIMS or accrediting it as a central institute would not only improve healthcare delivery in Nagaland but also benefit the wider northeastern region, he said.

He added that such a move would help address the shortage of specialised healthcare services, reduce dependence on other states for advanced treatment, and create greater opportunities for local youth in medical education and employment.
