Dimapur: The Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (NPMCC) has announced a state-level initiative to protect the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), citing its vital role in supporting rural womenโ€™s income and empowerment.

The decision came during a meeting of the NPMCC leadership at Congress Bhavan in Dimapur on Saturday, held under the slogan โ€œSave MGNREGAโ€, according to a release from the partyโ€™s media team.

Leaders and members from across the state attended the session, which was presided over by Shikali Swu, general secretary of the NPMCC. The event began with an opening prayer led by vice-president Neojila Yim.

During her address, Yim underlined that MGNREGA provides a statutory right to work for rural households, rather than being merely a welfare initiative.

She raised concerns over delays in wage payments, reduction in allotted workdays, and the exclusion of disadvantaged women from the programme due to administrative lapses.

The committee pledged to conduct community outreach to inform women about their entitlements, monitor cases of delayed wages or denied work, hold peaceful protests to voice concerns, and urge legislators at both the state and national levels to take the matter forward.
