Nagaland Lokayukta Justice Uma Nath Singh to take oath on February 22

Former Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Justice Uma Nath Singh, will take oath as the first Lokayukta of Nagaland at Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Kohima on February 22.

A Raj Bhavan release on Wednesday said Governor P B Acharya will administer the oath of office to Justice Singh at 6.30 pm on that day.

Acharya appointed Justice Singh as the Lokayukta of the state on February 1 last.

An official notification earleir said his appointment will take effect from the date of his taking oath of office before the Governor.

Justice Singh will hold office for a period of five years from the day he takes charge or till he attains the age of 70, whichever is earlier.

Expressing happiness at the appointment of the Lokayukta in Nagaland, anti-graft group – Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation – appealed to the Nagaland government earlier to give ‘enough teeth’ and necessary support to the Lokayukta to enable it to carry out its duties and functions in ‘letter and spirit’.

The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organization, the most vocal consumers’ body in the State, also urged the State Government to provide the Lokayukta with proper facilities so as to enable it to work as the most effective and powerful statutory body.
