Guwahati: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, has launched the 21st Livestock Census 2024 in Kohima, Nagaland.
The director of the department, Dr Achila Ao said that the importance of the census would solely be on accurate data collection.

The census, which will run from October 2024 to February 2025, aims to cover 474,267 households across the state.
Dr N Mhonchan Shitiri, Additional Director and SNO (LC&ISS) said cooperation and participation from all stakeholders to ensure accurate data collection was needed.
The launch was preceded by detailing the census’s nationwide launch by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, on October 25, 2024, in New Delhi.

The program was chaired by Dr Imomanen Tzudir, Joint Director, with Peter, Economics and Statistical Officer, delivering the vote of thanks.
Conducted every five years since 1919, the livestock census is a massive door-to-door enumeration exercise using computer-assisted personal interviewing through Android phones.
This digital approach replaced traditional paper schedules, ensuring more accurate and efficient data collection.
The census is conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Government of India.
The data collected will inform strategies and plans for the development of the livestock and poultry sector, determining fund distribution and service requirements for internal and external funding.
