Guwahati: The polling for Nagaland’s 28 Koridang (ST) Assembly by-election was held on Thursday, 9 April, and ended with a turnout of 82.21%, spread across 30 polling booths.
Officials noted that this exercise involved one of the heaviest security arrangements ever deployed for a single constituency.
Voting remained smooth and incident-free throughout the day. Authorities confirmed that no violence was reported, even though the constituency had witnessed pre-election disturbances that led to one death and damage to property.
Official records show that 18,045 votes were cast through EVMs, along with 253 postal ballots and 18 votes under the PwD category. This brought the total number of votes polled to 18,316.
The constituency has over 22,000 registered voters. Mangmetong tops with 99.08%, Alichen records 15.30%
Polling percentages differed sharply across locations. Mangmetong Polling Station-II saw the highest participation at 99.08%, while Alichen Polling Station-II recorded the lowest at 15.30%.
Authorities noted clear variation in voter participation across booths, with some areas showing very strong turnout while others, especially Alichen, remained low.
Officials said that additional security arrangements were placed in Alichen because of its past record of election-related violence. Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Ajit Kumar Verma and Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo stated that deployment decisions were based on field-level inputs and operational needs.
They also said that the lower turnout in Alichen was linked to strict identity checks and tight security measures, adding that only verified voters were allowed to vote and no eligible elector was denied access.
