Guwahati: The Nagaland government on July 19 announced a package of relief measures after the devastating landslide in Mon town left several people dead and caused extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure and other properties. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio declared an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim.
In an official statement, the government conveyed its deep sorrow over the tragedy, which occurred at around 6:30 am, and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. It also wished a swift recovery to those injured in the incident.
Apart from Mon district, Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district and other affected areas have reported landslides, flooding, road disruptions, and damage to both public infrastructure and private property.
Rescue and relief efforts are being coordinated by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), district administrations, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Nagaland Police and other line departments. Teams on the ground are conducting search and rescue operations, evacuating residents from vulnerable locations, restoring essential services and providing emergency assistance to affected families.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced an immediate ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 74,000 for each injured person. The state government also assured that affected households would receive food, temporary accommodation, essential supplies and other relief benefits as per eligibility.
The government has directed all concerned departments to remain on high alert and maintain close coordination to speed up emergency response, restore connectivity and carry out rehabilitation work. It added that the situation is being continuously reviewed and further assistance will be extended wherever required.
Residents have been urged to exercise caution by staying away from landslide-prone slopes, riverbanks and other vulnerable locations. The government also appealed to people to follow advisories issued by the NSDMA, the Home Department and district administrations, cooperate with rescue agencies, and avoid sharing rumours or unverified information.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Chief Minister Rio wrote on X that he was deeply saddened by reports of the devastating landslides in Mon district. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and said the state government is closely monitoring the situation while the NSDMA, district administration, DDMAs, SDRF, Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles and local communities continue search and rescue operations on the ground.
