Guwahati: A rescue team comprising local guides and youth volunteers saved a 19-year-old tourist from Guwahati after he fell about 100 feet while trekking to Dzükou Valley in Nagaland’s Viswema area on July 18.

The injured trekker was identified as Hisahetuk Das, who slipped from a trail near Khiyokesa at around 3 pm while making his way towards the popular valley.

Members of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, along with volunteers from the Viswema Youth Organisation and the Z Khel Viswema Youth Organisation, reached the spot and carried Das out of the area despite heavy rain, steep terrain and dense dwarf bamboo vegetation.

The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) credited the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams and recognised the role of its vice-president and Southern Angami Tour Guide Council chairman, Virato Naleo, in overseeing the operation.

After Das was brought out, the Community Health Centre (CHC), Viswema, arranged an ambulance to transport him, while doctors and emergency staff at the Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima, provided medical care.

SAYO said the incident showed the importance of trained local guides and community volunteers in responding to emergencies in remote trekking areas, especially during difficult weather conditions.

The organisation later advised tourists visiting Dzükou Valley and other trekking destinations to take necessary precautions.

It urged trekkers to use registered local guides, particularly during the monsoon season and on challenging routes, to ensure safer journeys and faster assistance during emergencies.
