Former Nagaland Minister K Yamakam is no more

Former Nagaland Minister and four-time MLA K Yamakam passed away at Zion Hospital in Dimapur on Friday.

Yamakam was also the father of Advisor of SCERT, IPR and Village Guards, Toshi Wungtung.

According to reports Yamakam founded the Sangphur Students Union the 1950s and also rendered his services to the Yimchunger community as an Executive Member of the Yimchunger Tribal Council (YTC). He later became the Advisor of YTC.

As per a TNT report, Yamakam also served as the Dobashi and later became Head Dobashi in the 70s. He was elected MLA for four consecutively from 1989 to 2003 during which period he also served as the Minister of State for Soil & Water Conservation, Sericulture (1993) and Minister for Horticulture, Sericulture, Relief and Rehabilitation (1998).

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed his deep condolence at the demise of the former minister.

Chief Minister Rio on his Twitter handle on Friday stated: “Saddened to know about the demise of former Minister and four-time MLA, Shri K. Yamakam; father of Toshi Wungtung, Advisor SCERT, IPR & Village Guards.”

Stating that “Late Yamakam was a man of integrity & commitment”, Rio stated: “My deepest condolences to the bereaved family and may the departed soul RIP.”

The report quoted Chief Minister Rio as saying: “Late Shri Yamakam was known to my family since many decades back when my father in law was serving as an Administrative Officer in Tuensang. During that time, they worked closely together. In later years, I was fortunate to have been colleagues with late Yamakam in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly over the last few terms and I personally found him to be a leader who had deep concern for all sections of the people.”

Leader of Opposition, TR Zeliang has also extended his condolences to the bereaved family. In his condolence message, Zeliang said Yamakam’s demise is a great loss not only to the Yimchunger community but the Nagas in general, the report stated.
