Farmer’s Welfare Day observed in Nagaland

Nagaland on Wednesday observed Farmer’s Welfare Day with Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) organizing farmers’ welfare workshops and other related programmes in different parts of the state under the theme ‘Doubling of Farmers Income’.

To mark the day in Dimapur, the Department of AH and Veterinary Services organized free vaccination of livestock and animal health camp at Veterinary Hospital, Burma Camp.

Free vaccination, free treatment and free medicine were given and more than 500 animals were treated during the camp.

Zunheboto ATMA block organized farmers welfare workshop at Zunheboto DC’s conference hall.

Addressing the event, SDO (C) Ajit Kumar Ranjan spoke on the importance of having self help groups (SHGs) for generating more income from farming. He encouraged farmers to open bank account for saving the money generated from agricultural products.

While presenting his speech through power point, Dr Rajesh from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nagaland University Lumami Campus, said to double the income, the farmers need to shift from monocrop area to multiple cropping. He informed the farmers to avail the facilities provided by KVK which can be accessed through online or by phone. He also stressed on the importance of using vermi compost in farming in order to have organic food.

Later the Department of Horticulture distributed vegetable seeds free of cost. Meanwhile the department of AH&VS organized free health camp/free ARV vaccination, fertility awareness and distribution of medicines in Zunheboto District Veterinary Hospital.

The ATMA in Bhandari under Wokha district in collaboration with Agri & Allied departments organized Kisan Kalyan Karyashala Farmers workshop at Bhandari community hall on the day.

Bhandari ADC Tiameren Chang, speaking at the programme, appreciated the departments for organizing the farmers workshop. He said organic foods are very important these days and people have sufficient land to feed the whole state.

He also urged the farmers to overcome laziness and make use of the potential resources, utilize the fertile land and supply the whole area with organic vegetables by the year 2022.
