Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday said his government has decided to cut down the intake of government employees in the state.
Rio informed the Assembly that the Nagaland government has decided to cut down the number of government employees so that it can utilise its funds more on the developmental activities of the state.

Chief Minister Rio stated that much of the funds are used in paying salaries of the large number of state government employees, reports TNT.
Rio added that the state continues to sacrifice its developmental requirements mainly to pay salaries to the employees.
Rio said that a time would come when government servants would need to perform their duties sincerely and enhance their productivity for the benefit of the people in whose name and at whose expense they were employed.

He further said that since the state government employees are paid well, the government would not be wrong in expecting them to be more dedicated to their works.
There were 95903 government employees in Nagaland as of March 31, 2014 out of the total population of Nagaland which during that time was 1978502.
During 2012-2013, as per records, there was an increase of 2,373 employees in the State.
This was stated in the Nagaland Economic Survey 2015-16 brought out by the State’s Economics & Statistics Department.
Out of 95,903 employees in 2014, Class I employees constituted 4.16 percent, Class II- 2.86 per cent, Class III- 66.75 percent and Class IV- 26.23 percent, the survey stated.
As per the survey report, most of the employees were from Scheduled Tribes (ST) category .
