Dimapur: The Nagaland Police has urged citizens to remain alert and act responsibly to preserve peace and communal harmony in the state amid the ongoing law and order situation in neighbouring Manipur.
In a statement issued on May 22, the police expressed concern over the possibility of unrest spilling over into Nagaland and appealed to the public to stay cautious.
The PRO of the Police Headquarters, in the release, advised people not to circulate or share unverified information, rumours or social media content that could spread misleading or provocative narratives.
The statement further warned that in the era of AI-generated and manipulated content, misinformation can easily be used to trigger tension and disturb ethnic and communal relations within the state.
Appealing for calm and restraint, the police cautioned that strict legal action would be taken against individuals found spreading fake news, inflammatory messages or rumours through social media or other platforms. Such offences, the release stated, would invite action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Information Technology Act and other applicable laws.
The police also assured that the situation is under close watch and that all necessary arrangements have been made to maintain peace, stability and law and order across Nagaland.
