NSCN (I-M) leader Khampei Opeiham Konyak

Guwahati: In a sensational assassination of a Naga nationalist leader in Nagaland in recent times, a senior leader of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah faction was killed on Wednesday night in Namsa of Mon district

The assassinated leader was a minister of the NSCN (I-M) faction and his name was Khampei Opeiham Konyak.

He was killed by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday night at about 9:30 pm.

According to numerous reports, he was shot several times at his residence in Namsa. The reports also say that he died while being taken to the hospital.   

It has been learned that the leader was planning to travel to Dimapur to seek security.

Konyak was with his family when unidentified individuals came to his residence and opened fire.  

Some reports have stated that Konyak was shot twice in the head and once in the chest.

Earlier, Konyak was with the NSCN-K (Yung Aung) faction before joining the NSCN-IM.

There have also been reports that different civil society organizations in the area were organizing protests regarding the assassination.  

Tizit police are said to be further investigating the sensational case.
