The Nagaland unit of JD (U) has voiced its opposition to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, saying being a secular party, it cannot support the bill.
JD (U) Nagaland president Senchumo Lotha in a press release said his party cannot support the proposed Amendment Bill as it is very pro-religion in its nature and purpose and allow it a safe passage in the house of the people.
The party appealed to all the secular minded people and parties of the country to oppose the bill for amendment so as to protect the Constitution of India and its deep rooted secularism.
The release said the party unit has taken the decision to oppose the bill in accordance with its JD (U) national president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who extended support to the demand of the people of Assam when a delegation led by the All Assam Students’ Union and 28 other indigenous organisations from the state met him at his residence in Patna recently.
Apart from others, the main demands include the withdrawal of the proposed bill, Implementation of Assam Accord and constitutional safeguards for the people of Assam and the northeastern states, the release added.
