Guwahati: In a major success, the Assam Rifles have said that they have seized 120 tonnes of areca/betel nuts worth Rs 14.32 crore in the local market.
The operation of the Assam Rifles was launched on National Highway 29 in Nagaland’s Kohima on Monday, the police informed.

Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was placed by the Assam Rifles personnel after they received the intelligence inputs on the smuggling of areca/betel nuts from Manipur to Nagaland.
As the trap was already laid, a surprise check was conducted on National Highway 29 near Jakhma and the Assam Rifles found four pick-ups and five trucks carrying 120 tonnes of areca/betel nuts without proper documentation.
Subsequently, the individuals and vehicles along with the areca/betel nuts were confiscated and handed over to the nearest police station.
