Guwahati: In a poignant testament to the unwavering courage and selflessness of the armed forces, Sepoy Shwensinlo Semp of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment exhibited extraordinary bravery during a tragic incident at Nsonji Lake in Nagaland’s Tseminyu district.
While on leave and enjoying a picnic with his friends on Sunday, June 30, Sepoy Semp demonstrated the essence of duty and sacrifice in the face of adversity.
During the outing near Nsonji Lake, one of Sepoy Semp’s friends found himself in danger in the treacherous waters, Kohima-based Defence PRO, Lt Col Amit Shukla, said late Tuesday (July 2) night.
Seeing his friend struggling, Sepoy Semp didn’t hesitate to jump into the lake and save him.
Unfortunately, despite successfully rescuing his friend, Sepoy Semp became entangled in weeds and mud on the lakebed, ultimately preventing him from saving himself, he said.
This heartfelt incident underscores the profound commitment of the Indian Army soldiers to protect and serve, even at great personal risk.
Sepoy Semp’s sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder that their readiness and valour have no limits.
His courageous act exemplifies the spirit of selflessness and bravery that defines our armed forces thus inspiring us all, he added.
Following the tragic incident, the Assam Rifles collaborated with the civil authorities, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), to carry out a rigorous operation to retrieve the body Sepoy Semp from the lake on Monday, July 1, he said.
Sepoy Semp’s actions serve as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifice made by members of the armed forces in the line of duty, often putting their own lives at risk to ensure the safety and well-being of others, he added.
We mourn the loss of a true hero whose actions exemplified the highest ideals of military service. Sepoy Semp’s legacy will forever be honoured and remembered for his unwavering commitment towards duty and his comrades, Lt Col Shukla further said.
