The Muslim Welfare Society, Mizoram, having its headquarters at Bara Bazar, Aizawl condemned the atrocities carried out by Assam Police personnel at Zopui along the Assam-Mizoram border on Friday.

In a press release, the Muslim Welfare Society not only condemned the atrocities of Assam Police resulting in the sustaining of bullet injuries by two Mizos but also demanded compensation for the victims of police brutality.

It also pleaded Assam government to have confidence in the government of Mizoram to handle the situation at Zophai from further escalation of violence.

This is a welcome gesture on the part of the Muslim Welfare Society which claimed itself to be an organisation formed with law-abiding citizens of Mizoram.

The Mizoram government has described as “serious” the situation of the disputed border areas with Assam, and urged the neighbouring state to hold talks to reduce tension.

While the Mizoram Police claimed that a Mizo student was injured in firing by Assam Police at Zopui, the Assam Police denied the charge saying that they had only pushed back the intruders from Hailakandi on Friday.
