The Congress on Sunday selected outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma as the leader of the Meghalaya Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
The party submitted a letter to the Meghalaya Governor naming Sangma as the CLP leader.

“In presence of the resolution of the CLP, the congress president has named Dr. Mukul Sangma as the leader of the Meghalaya Congress Legislature Party,” the letter read.
Earlier in the day, Sangma submitted his resignation from the post of Meghalaya Chief Minister.
Sangma submitted his resignation to Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad in Shillong following the assembly election results.

With the final decision of the leaders of the new state government awaited, Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the United Democratic Party (UDP) has extended their support to the formation of a “non-Congress government” led by the National People’s Party (NPP) in the state.
As per the results of the Meghalaya State Assembly polls declared on Saturday, the Congress party retained its hold with 21 seats.
However, the NPP bagged 19 seats, which implies that even though the Congress party won, it still may not form the government.
