Mother and two-year-old baby buried alive in landslide in Manipur.

Imphal: A  housewife and her two-year-old baby of a tribal family were buried alive in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Manipur’s Tamenglong district bordering Assam and Nagaland on the northwest in the early hours of Tuesday.

The husband of the deceased woman, a constable in the Manipur police department, and his teenage son got serious injuries in the fury of nature, the police said.

The family of the deceased hailed from Tabanglong village of the Tamenglong district and at present they are residing in a rental house located at Dingthanglong Ward number 3 of Tamenglong district headquarters.

The deceased mother Duanjanglin Kamei, 29, and her child Jasjingangai, 2, lost their lives in the landslide that occurred at around 12;50 am on Tuesday. 

Her husband Ringsilung Kamei, 30, a police constable, and a teenage son also sustained serious injuries in the natural disaster and they are being treated at the Tamenglong district hospital. Kamei is posted at Tamenglong district headquarters.

In the adjoining Noney district of Tamenglong, there is also a report of landslides between Nungba and Rengpang villages on the National Highway-37  connecting Imphal to Silchar, via the Jiribam district headquarters on Tuesday.

Hundreds of goods-laden vehicles plying between Imphal to Silchar in Assam and vice-versa are stranded at the villages of Sinam, Khongi part two, and Lukhambi under the Noney districts of Manipur.

The landslide in these areas has blockaded the transportation of vehicles since early morning on Thursday, officials said.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are at present undertaking the road repair works at the speedy duration on NH 37.

The incessant rainfall that started on Sunday has played havoc at different locations.
