A 29-year-old daily wage earner accused of raping a minor girl (a Grade VII student), was stripped and paraded naked in Longleng town of Nagaland by an apex women’s body of the town – Phom Women Association – on June 29 last.
An India Today report stated that the accused has been identified as Longya Phom and the victim knows him as both of them are neighbours.
As soon as the victim’s family knew about the incident, they reported the matter to their relatives who, in turn, reported to the women’s organisation. Phom Women Association caught the accused on June 29 last and along with the public paraded him naked around the whole town. On his neck was hung a board that read – ‘I raped a minor girl’. He was then handed over to the police.
The report further stated that Phom confessed to his crime in full public glare. A case has been registered in this connection and the daily wage earner is presently in police custody.
Earlier, on May 31 last, local people had thrashed, stripped and paraded naked in Nagaland’s Mon district a non-tribal boy for raping a 12-year-old tribal girl until the police arrived and took the suspect into custody.
In a case of mob justice, the rape suspect – a salesman at a watch store (Rahul Sen) who hails from Dibrugarh in Assam – was also paraded naked in the village like Longya and a board was also hung in his neck that read – ‘I am a rapist’.
The incident happened in a remote village in Mon district bordering Myanmar. The victim was raped at least on three occasions, police stated.
The sexual assault came to light after the minor, a primary school student, complained of uneasiness and was taken to the hospital by her elder sister. A medical examination confirmed rape.
