Two medical students of Mizoram’s Zoram Medical College were drowned in river Tuirivang on Wednesday, a senior police officer said.

The victims have been identified as 21-year-old C. Lalbiaknunga (21), a resident of Champhai Vengthlang and 21-year-old PC Lalremliana of Dinthar locality in Aizawl, said Mizoram deputy inspector general of police (northern range) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte.

Both were MBBS students at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), the state’s lone medical college located at Falkawn, about 18 km south of Aizawl, the top cop said.

The incident occurred when the victims along with their friends went to river Tuirivang, which falls under Kulikawn police station in Aizawl, to take a bath in the river in order to escape the heat, Khiangte said.

Their bodies were recovered in the evening and were brought to the nearby village, Phulpui, where necessary arrangements for further evacuation would be made, he said.

On being informed, police personnel from Kulikawn police station rushed to Phulpui village and they will conduct an inquest there, he added.
