Two Mizoram MPs meet Nirmala Sitharaman, urge to write off loan liabilities to HUDCO

The two Mizoram MPS in conversation with Nirmala Sitharaman

The two Members of Parliament members from Mizoram- C Lalrosanga (Lok Sabha) and K Vanlalvena (Rajya Sabha)- called on the union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman urging her to write off loan liabilities to Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) amounting to Rs 39.29 core, an official said on Thursday.

The loan was extended by HUDCO to the Mizoram government in 1992 for the rehabilitation of former cadres of the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF), who came overground following the historic Mizo peace accord in 1986 and as housing assistance for the poor, the official said.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga had earlier discussed the matter with the Union Minister and asked her to write off the loan interests amounting to Rs 39.29 crore.

During an interaction on Wednesday, the two Mizoram MPs discussed with Sitharaman a wide range of issues, including writing off loan interest, equal distribution of  Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources(NLCPR)  among states and immediate release of the second instalment of MP Local Area Development fund, the official said.

He said that Sitharaman assured the two MPs to settle the issue as soon as possible and also assured them to look into their request for even distribution of NLCPR among the states.
