Smuggled foreign cigarettes valued at Rs 1.20 crore were seized by Assam Rifles and Customs department sleuths in Mizoram on Monday along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The contraband (93 cases) worth Rs 1.20 crore in the local market was seized at Zokhawthar town in Champhai district by a joint surveillance team of Assam Rifles and customs department, the sources said.

The consignment was later handed over to custom departments in Zokhawthar for legal proceedings, it said.

Over the years, Assam Rifles have been a force reckoned to fight the menace of smuggling in Mizoram.

Extensive anti-seizure operations have been successful in thwarting the smuggling nexus along the Indo-Myanmar border, Assam Rifles sources added.

The Assam Rifles has recently launched an anti-drug campaign in Mizoram to fight the menace of drug abuse and drug smuggling in the state.
