Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan on Thursday graced the inaugural session of the Second Mizoram Science Congress (MSC) as the chief guest held at Multipurpose Auditorium of Pachhunga University College in Aizawl.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajasekharan said that science and technology are the essential components of socio-economic development.
He said that the world’s richest countries today are the ones leading on the science and technological front.
He said technological edge was the key to their continued dominance. He said Mizoram due to its high literacy rate has the potential to move ahead of others and attain equal socio-economic growth, for which he said top quality education especially in science and technology was central.
“We should focus our preference of science education and research towards our strengths – eco-tourism, horticulture, forestry and environment sectors coupled with improvement in information and communication technology and healthcare,” he said.
Welcoming the gathering, Dr R K Lalianthanga, Chief Scientific Officer, and also the Chairman of the MSC 2018 organizing committee said the Congress has provided a common platform for scientists from various disciplines, students and individuals interested in science.
He had hoped that the second Mizoram Science Congress may ignite their minds resulting in the revival of science education and research in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, Prof MRN Murthy, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore gave a talk on this year’s theme – ‘Perspective and trends in the development of science education and research’.
Dr Laldinpuia, secretary of MSC 2018 organizing committee also presented a brief report on this year’s Mizoram Science Congress.
Eleven professors including three from outside the State are participating in the Congress and four parallel technical sessions will be held during the two-day event.
A total of 110 abstract papers have been received and 24 science models will be on display.
The event is being organized by Mizoram Science, Technology and Innovation Council (MISTIC), an autonomous body under Directorate of Science and Technology, Government of Mizoram in collaboration with seven science NGOs from the State.
