AIZAWL: The Mizo National Front (MNF) on Friday lodged a complaint with state police over the appointment of C Lalchhandami as the chairperson for Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW).
MNF legal board vice chairman Lalpianfela Chawngthu alleged that Lalchhandami was appointed as the chairperson for MSCW by the government against the law.

He said that Lalchhandami has already crossed the age limit as prescribed in the eligibility criteria for the chairperson.
According to Mizoram State Commission for Women Act 2004, any person, who have crossed 65 years can’t be appointed as chairperson for MSCW.

Lalpianfela said that Lalchhandami has crossed 67 years as per government and church records.
The MNF also demanded Lalchhandami to tender resignation on or before September 9, failing which the party warned stringent actions.
Mizo Student Union (MSU), one of the apex student bodies in the state, also alleged that Lalchhandami was illegally appointed despite crossing the age limit.

As per a reply sought under the Right to Information Act, Lalchhandami retired on superannuation from government service on March 31, 2016, the organisation said.
Meanwhile, social welfare minister Lalrinpuii defended the government over the appointment of Lalchhandami stating that there is no any irregularity from the government side.
As per the birth certificate submitted by Lalchhandami, she was born in 1960, she said.
The government accepted the birth certificate and accordingly, Lalchhandami can work as chairperson for MSCW, Lalrinpuii said.
