One person has been reportedly died of scrub typhus at Pangzawl village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district.

According to district Health Department officials as many as 107 others are suffering from scrub typhus infection in the village.

Health department officials informed that a 29-year-old man, who was a teacher at Pangzawl Higher Secondary School died of the infection recently.

They said at lead 107 people, including 53 females are currently falling sick to scrub typhus infection in the village.

According to State Health Department sources, more than 41 people have died of the infection and over 1,000 infected with scrub typhus since the first case was reported in Mizoram way back in 2012.

They also said that 28 cases of scrub typhus infection were reported from Thenzawl town in Serchhip district and two have died of the infection in the town since January this year.

With 223 cases identified recently, at least 36 people have been infected with scrub typhus since the first case was detected in Thenzawl in 2015, officials added.

Two people have died of the infection since January this year, according to State Health Department.

The first death was reported from the town on May 11 when a seven-year-old girl died of the infection in a hospital.

The second victim was 53-year-old Ramluahtlingi of Thenzawl Kanan Veng locality, who died at state referral hospital in Falkawn on Monday.

Scrub typhus is a mite-borne disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi.

The symptoms of scrub typhus are fever, a primary lesion, a macular rash, and lymphad-enopathy.
