AIZAWL: Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) – the main opposition party in Mizoram – has stated that it strongly opposes any bid to implement the uniform civil code (UCC) in the country.
ZPM working president K Sapdanga told media persons that the party recently wrote to the law commission of India opposing the implementation of the uniform civil code (UCC).

He said that the Mizo Christians will be worst affected if the uniform civil code (UCC) is implemented as Mizoram has sent the largest number of missionaries among the Northeast states.
“Although there is a bid to exempt the Northeast, we want the uniform civil code (UCC) not to be implemented in the entire country,” Sapdanga said.
Thus far the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress and Mizoram Church Leaders’ Committee have written to the law commission opposing any move to implement the uniform civil code.

BJP Mizoram unit had earlier stated in a statement that it also opposed the implementation of uniform civil code in the country.
