Mizoram: ZPM asks government to provide security for farmers at the border

The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has urged the Mizoram government to protect broomstick growers near the Assam-Mizoram border so that they can reap “their harvest”.

ZPM said that the broomstick farmers living in the Aitlang area near Vairengte are facing a severe crisis as their land mostly farmland is still “occupied by the Assam Police”.

The area is also disputed and border-related tension is usually recorded there.

The ZPM further said that the farmers will be unable to harvest the products if they are not provided with security.

The statement added, “There are more than 18 farmers in the Aitlang area and Assam Police have been camping face to face with Mizoram Police there since June last year.”

The ZPM further in the statement alleged that the farmers in Kolasib district’s Saihapui are not being able to harvest their areca nut plantations are they are not being allowed by the police in Assam.

The statement further added asked the Mizoram government to ensure that the farmers are given adequate protection.
