The Mizoram University (MZU) on Sunday deferred the upcoming Under Graduate examinations following appeals by student bodies and Mizoram Principal’s Council due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.

In its urgent notification. the MZU stated, “Under Graduate even semester examination will not be held from 10 to 14 August in view of the present situation due to COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown imposed in certain localities in Aizawl.”

The paper which was scheduled during this period will be shifted after September 3, it said.

The notification also said that arrangement for professional courses like LLB, BSW and BOA examinations has been made as per which the examination will not be held during 10 to 14 August and the paper which was scheduled during this period will be shifted afterwards.

There is no change in the conduct of examinations in respect of MCA and BCA, which will be held as per scheme from 10 August, the notification said.

In a notification issued on Thursday, the University said that examinations for UG even semester for 6th semester and repeaters for all semester and professional courses will be held as per schedule commencing from August 10.

Two apex student bodies of Mizoram, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) on Sunday asked Mizo University (MZU) to postpone the upcoming Under Graduate (UG) degree examinations following the surge in Coronavirus case in the state.

In a letter addressed to MZU vice-chancellor, MZP said that it does not believe that it is in the best interest of the students to sit for the university examination slated for August 10 due to the hike in COVID-19 cases in the state and as complete lockdowns are being imposed in several localities of Aizawl.

An emergency meeting of MSU with leaders of Aizawl City College Joint Student’s Union (ACCJSU) also asked the university to postpone the examinations due to a spike in Covid-19 cases in the state.

Mizoram Principals’ Council also on Sunday wrote to the controller of examination, Mizoram University, imploring the latter to review the decision of holding the examination.

Mizoram reported 48 more Covid-19 cases between Saturday and Sunday, taking the state’s tally to 613.

Of the 48 new cases, 43 were confirmed on Saturday night and 5 on Sunday, according to officials.

The new patients included 22 BSF jawans and 18 truckers and their helpers, they said.

Three of the newly infected patients contracted the deadly virus from Covid-19 patients, they said.

Officials said that self-imposed complete lockdown has been observed in several localities in Aizawl since Sunday to prevent further spread of the virus.
