Aizawl: Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday directed officials and contractors to accelerate construction of the Rs 500-crore Aizawl bypass project to ensure its completion by the January 2028 deadline, officials said.

Majumdar inspected the ongoing construction of the 45-km road, being developed under the Prime Ministerโ€™s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DeVINE) scheme. During his visit to the Sihhmui base camp, he interacted with state Public Works Department officials and representatives of the executing agency.

The minister instructed the contractor to deploy additional workers and machinery to expedite construction and prevent delays.

The proposed western bypass will connect Sihhmui in Sairang with Muallungthu, located around 19 km south of Aizawl. Once completed, the road is expected to ease traffic congestion in the state capital and improve connectivity to Lengpui Airport, Sairang railway station, the Industrial Growth Centre at Luangmual, Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH), and southern Mizoram.

Officials said the road would also pass close to the approach road to Reiek, a prominent tourist destination in the state.

Majumdar suggested that the state government consider constructing an additional approach road linking Aizawl city with the bypass using its own funds to improve the project’s overall utility.

Officials also proposed incorporating tourism-related infrastructure and beautification works along the route in the next phase of PM-DeVINE. They said such facilities could enhance the area’s tourism potential while contributing to improved road safety.

The Aizawl bypass project was sanctioned at Rs 500 crore in February 2024 and awarded to RG Buildwell Engineers Pvt Ltd. Construction began on January 16, 2026, according to officials.

Around 33.61 per cent of the work had been completed at the time of the inspection. The entire project is scheduled for completion by January 16, 2028.

Beyond easing traffic congestion, the bypass is expected to improve the transportation of agricultural produce and create better livelihood opportunities for communities along the route.
