Mizoram is the best-performing state in the Northeast in regards to Covid-19 testing. 

The state has conducted tests on over 9 lakh samples for Covid-19, which is more than 82 per cent of its population (2011 census), an official said.

State official spokesperson on Covid-19 Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma has claimed that the main reason behind high detection rate of Covid-19 positive cases in the state was because of “good performance in sample tests.”  

He said that the daily infection rate during the second wave of the pandemic was usually high as most samples were collected from suspected people. 

“Mizoram is the best performing state among Northeastern states in a sample test for Covid-19 and also stands at top ten chart in the entire country. We have tested at least 9,05,112 samples for Covid-19 till September 5, which is 82.96 per cent of 10.9 lakh population according to 2011 census,” he said.

Pachuau also claimed that Mizoram also performed the best in RT-PCR and TrueNat test in the NE after Assam. 

He said that the proportion of RT-PCR and TrueNat tests is 26.52 per cent of the total population. 

He said that the state Covid-19 count now stands at 65,696. 

Although the detection of Covid-19 positive cases was comparatively during the first wave of the pandemic (March 2020 to March 2021), the Covid-19 was skyrocketed since April this year, he said. 

While 4,476 Covid-19 cases were detected during the first wave, at least 61,220 cases were detected from April till September 7 this year, he said. 

He said that 1,655 cases were reported in April, 6,268 in May, 8,093 in June, 18,433 in July and 21,074 in August this year.

Mizoram on Tuesday reported the highest single-day spike as 1,468 new Covid-19 cases, pushing the state’s tally to 65,696. 

According to a statement by state information and public relations department, two more fatalities were reported on Tuesday, which took the death toll to 227. 

The single day infection rate was 11.92 per cent as the fresh cases were reported from 12,315 samples, it said. 

The number of active cases now stands at 10,879, while 54,590 people have recovered from the infection, including 534 people on Tuesday, the statement said. 

The recovery rate among COvid-19 patients is 83 per cent and the death rate is 0.34 per cent. 

The state has tested more than 9.31 lakh samples for Covid-19 till date, it said. 

According to state immunisation officer Dr. Lalzawmi, over 6.60 lakh people have been vaccinated till Tuesday.
