The Mizoram Government Aided School Association (MIGASA), constituting private teachers working in government grant-in-aid high schools and middle schools began a ‘No Teaching Day’ on Thursday in protest against the Mizoram Government’s failure to meet its demands to upgrade 61 schools to ad hoc status within a stipulated time.

The association’s president, C Lalnghaizuala, said they had to resort to agitation after the State Government failed to give any positive response to their demands.

He also announced that the agitation will be observed till August 17 and if the State Government failed to meet their demand, they will impose a closure on 61 schools across the State.

He, however, also expressed regret that the strike will affect over 3,000 students across the State.

Lalnghaizuala alleged that the Congress Government upgraded many private schools to lumpsum grant-in aid status but failed to upgrade the existing lumpsum grant in aided schools.

Lalnghaizuala said that the schools were running with a lumpsum grant of Rs 1.2 lakhs annually for more than 10 years.

While schools were upgraded every five years scone Mizoram was a union territory, but the ruling Congress Government has failed to take any step for upgradation of schools during its 10 years rule, he further said.
