Aizwal: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has extended its support to a protest rally being organised by the Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM) in Aizawl on August 11 against the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill 2026.
The state Congress has also urged its workers and supporters to participate in the demonstration, a party leader said.
The CCM, an apex body representing nine major churches in Mizoram, including the Presbyterian Church of India and the Baptist Church of Mizoram, is organising the rally to oppose the proposed changes to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA).
The decision to support the protest was taken at an MPCC executive meeting held at Congress Bhavan and chaired by senior vice president Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, Congress spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei said.
In a resolution adopted at the meeting, the party appealed to all Members of Parliament from Mizoram to oppose the proposed legislation during both debate and voting in Parliament.
The MPCC alleged that the BJP and RSS were pursuing a broader agenda to establish a Hindu Rashtra and accused them of targeting foreign funding received by Christian organisations. The party also alleged that such funding was being portrayed as a means of facilitating religious conversions.
The Congress said the proposed amendments could impose further restrictions on Christian organisations receiving foreign contributions.
The MPCC also rejected comments attributed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent meeting with a Mizoram delegation, in which he reportedly said the proposed amendments would not have retrospective effect. The Congress maintained that the legislation was primarily aimed at tightening restrictions on organisations receiving foreign funds.
The party said it would continue to oppose the proposed amendments and stressed that the FCRA applies not only to Christian organisations but also to NGOs and other groups involved in providing assistance to communities.
The Congress warned that stricter provisions could affect organisations and beneficiaries dependent on foreign-funded programmes for various forms of support.
The MPCC also urged the Mizoram government to convene a special session of the state Assembly and pass a resolution opposing the FCRA Amendment Bill 2026. The party said such a move would reflect the opposition of the people of Mizoram to the proposed legislation.
