In a major success in its crusade against illicit and illegal activities of drug peddling, Aizawl Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of 23 Sector Assam Rifles on Sunday seized over 1 lakh tablets of Methamphetamine during a joint operation with the customs department in Champhai bordering Myanmar, Assam Rifles sources said.
A drug peddler identified as Biakzama (19), a resident of Zokhawthar Vengthar in Champhai district has been arrested for possessing the contraband valued at Rs 3.84 crore in the local market, the sources said.
The accused along with the seized drugs was handed over to the concerned department for further investigation and prosecution, it said.
Earlier in August, Assam Rifles had also seized 1 lakh Methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 3.50 crore in Diltlang area of Champhai district and arrested a peddler in connection with the seizure.
Ongoing illegal drug trades are a major cause of concern for Mizoram. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of North East’ have been successful in launching such operations against the illicit smuggling in the state.
