Mizoram health minister Dr R Lalthangliana has stressed the need to establish a good mental hospital in the state.
Lalthangliana said this while addressing a gathering on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day, which was observed in Aizawl on Friday.
“Modern medical science has made it possible to treat Alzheimer patients in a meaningful way,” he said.
“Establishment of good mental hospitals across the state will help diagnose Alzheimer,” he added.
The function to observe World Alzheimer’s Day was organized by ARDSI Mizoram Chapter and the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP).
Alzheimer is the most common cause of dementia and accounts for 50 to 60 per cent of all cases.
The disease destroys one’s brain cells and nerves disrupting the transmitters which carry messages in the brain, particularly those responsible for storing memories.
The disease was first described in 1906 by Alois Alzheimer, a famous German psychiatrist and neuropathologist.
