Sleuths of the excise and narcotics department have arrested a Myanmar national with 203 grams of heroin near Zote village in Mizoram’s Champhai district along the Indo-Burma border, an official statement said on Friday.

The Myanmar national identified as Thanglanchin (41), a resident of Fartlang in Myanmar, has been arrested for possessing the contraband worth Rs. 5.25 lakh, the statement said.

He was booked under relevant sections of The Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, it said.

The statement said that the heroin supply has been considerably increased after the relaxation of coronavirus-induced lockdown.

The number of peddlers and drug abuse has also soared after lockdown, it said.

So far, the state excise and narcotics department has seized 278 grams of heroin this year, the statement said.

Two people, both males aged 41, have died due to drug abuse in the current year till Friday, the statement added.

Meanwhile, personnel of the excise and narcotics department on Friday raided Phunchawng and Rangvamual areas on the outskirts of Aizawl and destroyed several temporary liquor factories and pots used for brewing alcohol.
