The ruling Mizoram National Front (MNF) on Monday suffered yet another setback as its vice present Vanlalzawma resigned from his post citing moral responsibility.

This came a day after the MNF president lost the bypoll to Serchhip assembly seat.

Vanlalzawma tendered his resignation to party president and chief minister Zoramthanga, the sources said.

Speaking to reporters, the MNF leader said he resigned as the party vice president because he failed in his responsibility.

He lost to Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) candidate Lalduhoma in the bypoll to Serchhip seat held on April 17 by a margin of 3,310 votes.

The MNF leader finished second securing 5,319 votes in the bypoll, the result of which was announced on Sunday.

Vanlalzawma had won the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram for two consecutive terms from 1999 to 2009 first as an independent candidate and later as a member of the MNF.

The 65- year-old leader had successfully contested the state assembly polls from the Aizawl West-III constituency in 2013 and became an opposition leader in the state legislature for one term.
