The oldest active cup competition under the Mizoram Football Association (MFA), the LG Independence Cup was launched on the evening of July 25 last in Aizawl. This illustrious cup competition will be played from Friday
(July 27) at Lammual (Aizawl) in Mizoram. Lammual is a general open pitch in Aizawl and is mainly used for football.
The launch programme was held in Hotel Regency with Amit Gujral, Chief Marketing Officer, LG Electronics India, and Ranjit Kumar, MD – Task Team, representing LG Electronics. Jeje Lalpekhlua, India international striker, unveiled the Cup in the presence of Gujral, Lalnghinglova Hmar, Executive Committee Member of All India Football Federation (AIFF) and other guests.

“We are not stopping at just the Independence Cup. It is just the beginning. We are committed to the people of Mizoram, the youth of Mizoram. We would love to be a part of the upcoming footballing stars from Mizoram and have some kind of association in upbringing the football stature of Mizoram,” stated Mr Gujral.
Chennaiyin FC striker Jeje reminisced, “I was part of the 2006 I-Day Cup in what was my first senior tournament in football. It has opened up ways for me and now it is my wish that this year’s edition do the same for other footballers.”
The esteemed guests unveiled the new Independence Cup trophy which was followed by a tie draw for 10 participating teams.

This year’s edition of the Independence Cup will feature the eight Mizoram Premier League clubs and Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Jamshedpur FC reserves along with Kanan Veng FC from the Aizawl District FA First Division.
The LG Independence Cup will also be played by women’s teams. Miss Mizoram 2018 T Ramthanmawii unveiled the jerseys that will be worn by the women teams, all of which are sponsored by LG Electronics.
The tournament is scheduled to commence on July 27 and will conclude on August 15, 2018.
