Mizoram’s Lengpui airport, which has a tabletop runway, is safe for the landing of passenger aircraft like Airbus A320 and mid-size cargo planes.

This assertion was made by the airport officials in the backdrop of an Air India plane crashing at Kerala’s Kozhikode airport, killing at least 18 people Friday.

Officials informed that the runway is of 2,500 metres in length and has a breadth of 45 metres.

“This is enough space and is strong enough for a safe landing,” said J Lalhmingliana, Principal Consultant in the Civil Aviation wing of the General Administration department.

Lengpui airport Mizoram’s only airport, which is located about 32 km northwest of capital Aizawl.

The country has five more airports with tabletop runways, of which four airport- Kozhikode, Mangalore (Karnakata), Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) and Pakyong (Sikkim)- are operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Mizoram’s Lengpui airport is with the state government.
