Mizoram Government on Tuesday appointed Municipal Commissioner K Laldingliana as the administrator of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC).

With the term of the present board is due to expire on December 10. K Laldingliana has been appointed as the administrator of Aizawl Municipal Corporation.

Elections for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation could not be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mizoram State Election Commission had apprised the State Government that holding elections amid spiraling COVID-19 situation in Aizawl is not in the interest of public health.

“Under this circumstance, the State Government designated Municipal Commissioner K Laldingliana as an administrator to look after the municipal corporation with effect from December 10 till the time election is conducted or until further order,” informed Mizoram Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia.

A notification to this effect has also issued by the Government.

Mizoram’s main opposition party – Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) had accused the State Government was reluctant to conduct elections.

“MNF could not find any suitable candidates, so they delayed the elections. COVID-19 has nothing to do with it,” ZPM vice president K Sapdanga said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia has rubbished the allegations levelled by the ZPM and said that the Government has nothing to do with selection of candidates, it’s the job of the parties.

Aizawl Municipal Corporation comprises of 19 seats, of which six of them are reserved for women.
