Aizawl: Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana has urged the Centre to frame education policies keeping in view the distinct geographical and socio-economic conditions of northeastern states, an official statement here said on Friday.
Addressing the North East Education Conclave 2026 in Nagaland’s Chümoukedima district, Vanlalthlana said that several challenges faced by the region cannot be addressed by applying the uniform approach followed for larger states.
He spoke about Mizoram’s progress in the education sector and the challenges in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Mizoram Minister said that declining enrolment in government schools, the shortage of secondary schools in rural areas, inadequate manpower in DIETs and SCERTs, poor internet connectivity and difficulties in providing solar power were among the major concerns faced by Mizoram and other northeastern states.
He also cited financial constraints faced by the northeastern states in recruiting additional personnel and developing education infrastructure, and urged the Centre to recognise these as common regional challenges and extend appropriate support to address them.
Vanlalthlana said that Mizoram has introduced the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools and was making effective use of the Vidya Samiksha Kendra to strengthen monitoring and assessment.
He also spoke about Project Intodelh, which seeks to equip students with knowledge of financial management and entrepreneurship to help them become self-reliant.
The Mizoram delegation submitted proposals on implementing Samagra Shiksha 3.0 and PM-USHA, besides suggesting education strategies suited to the state’s geographical conditions and the way of life of its people, the statement said.
