Mizoram: Congress announces candidates for Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections

Opposition in Mizoram, the Congress has announced its list of candidates for the upcoming polls to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), which is likely to be held next month.

The Congress in Mizoram announced its candidates for the AMC on Tuesday in a party function in Aizawl.

Mizoram Congress President Lal Thanhawla announced the names of 19 candidates that includes 6 women.

As many as 103 new members were also inducted into Congress party during the function.

Speaking about the Congress party’s poll prospects in the upcoming AMC elections, Lal Thanhawla expressed confidence of winning the Municipal polls.

Taking a dig at the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) Government in the State, the Mizoram Congress Chief alleged that State government headed by Chief Minister Zoramthanga has completely failed in financial management, which has adversely affected the State’s economy.

He said that the State Government has deferred payment of salaries to Government employees and failed to pay pension, provident fund and contract bills due to poor financial management.

Lal Thanhawla promised that Congress will reform the State’s economy if it is voted to power in the next Assembly election, slated to be held in 2023.

Meanwhile, Mizoram State Election Commissioner – Laima Chozah said the poll panel is yet to notify poll dates for elections to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation.

Aizawl Municipal Corporation comprises of 19 seats in total, out of which 6 seats are reserved for women.

Elections to the AMC has been necessitated following the term of the previous AMC ended on December 10 last year.

Earlier, the Mizoram Government appointed AMC Commissioner K Laldingliana as an administrator to exercise all power and function vested on the municipal authorities till elections are held.
